The Marshall H. Groom Endowed Scholarship was established in 1994 from gifts given by Marshall H. Groom and the National Capital Chapter.
Priority of consideration is given to entering freshmen from Northern Virginia
Marshall Groom was born in 1938 at the Columbia Hospital in Washington, D.C. He graduated from Murphy High School in Mobile, AL in 1956 and enrolled at the University of Alabama that same year. Marshall graduated from The Capstone in 1960 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration. While at The University of Alabama, he was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi, Cotillion Club, Philos, Freshman Advisors Council, and Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. After graduating he attended the University of Alabama Law School for one year prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1961.
In 1962 Marshall returned to the Washington D.C. and began his distinguished career in banking spanning over 40 years. Marshall has held the title of President and Chief Executive Officer with three banks in the Northern Virginia area throughout the years (Potomac Bank and Trust, 1972-1977, Services Bank, 1977-1979, George Mason Bank, 1979-1994). In 1997 he was named Chairman of the Potomac Bank of Virginia and served in that capacity until the Potomac Bank of Virginia merged with Sandy Springs Bank in February 2007. Marshall currently serves on the Board of Directors of Sandy Springs Bank.
Marshall remains active in the Northern Virginia community. He is a past President of the national Capital Chapter of the University of Alabama Alumni Association as well as a past board member of Capital Hospice (1994-2004) and Chairman of the Capital Hospice Foundation (2004-2007). Other affiliations include: George Mason University Foundation (1998-2007 Board Member, Chairman of Finance Committee, Chairman of Executive Committee), Northern Virginia Community College (Board Member), Fairfax Bar Association (Non-Lawyer Board Member), Fairfax Rotary (Past President).
Marshall is married to Pat Groom and together they have five children and three grandchildren.
