Raising funds for our six scholarship programs is one of the most important functions of the National Capital Chapter. Five scholarships have been named for individuals that were or are members of the National Capital Chapter family and have shown leadership in our endeavors. Additionally, our General Fund accepts receipts, which are distributed evenly between the six other scholarship funds.
Currently the National Capital Chapter is the leading out-of-state chapter in terms of both number of funds and the total amount under endowment. As of August 2009, the NCC has just under $225,000.00 in our six funds. We sent the University over $9,000.00 at the end of June 2009 that qualified for this year's matching funds from the National Alumni. This nearly doubled our contribution for the year to over $18,000!!!
Chapter members should be aware that any funds sent to any of our six scholarships are matched each year by the University of Alabama National Alumni Association Collegiate License Tag Program. This program was launched on July 1, 1988. Receipts collected by the State of Alabama are made available to the National Alumni Association for the express purpose of matching contributions to endowed scholarships. The amount matched varies from year to year based on receipts collected. However, in recent years the matching amount has generally been anywhere from 80% to 100%!
So if you donate $100 to any of our funds, not only do you get to take a federal tax deduction, the National Alumni Association puts in another $80.00 to $100.00 on your behalf! This matching amount is good for any amount, even $5.00. So when renewing your membership or attending one of our events, please consider giving a few extra dollars for one of our funds.
It's no secret that college expenses have been rising faster than the core rate of inflation and this trend is expected to continue in the future. In this environment, our scholarships are as important as they have ever been.
To make a scholarship donation, please make your check out to The University of Alabama, noting to which scholarship you would like your funds to go (scholarship descriptions are listed in the links below). You can send your check directly to the Alumni Office or to us. This is the only way to ensure that your donation can be treated as tax-deductible by the IRS. Due to new regulations, we can no longer accept scholarship donations via our website or through checks made out to the National Capital Chapter.
