The National Capital Chapter is actively involved in the Capital Alumni Network (CAN), which serves Washington, DC metropolitan area college and university alumni chapters by creating an environment in which alumni may satisfy their educational, networking, public service, social and athletic goals. CAN sponsors a variety of events throughout the year, including leagues for sports such as softball and flag football.
For the fifth year, the National Capital Chapter sponsored a team in the Capital Alumni Network flag football league. All games were played at Anacostia Park in Washington, DC. Continuing the trend of improvement from the three preceding years, the Tide reeled off an all-time high eight wins, including a 7-3 regular season record and a 26-0 romp over Ohio State in the postseason tournament. The tough defense was on display all season, with additional shutout wins over Yale, Florida State, and SEC foe Georgia. Season highlights also included a dramatic comeback win over perennial power Maryland and a second place finish in the division. More importantly, several new players were added to the roster this season. Flag football has proven, once again, to be a successful means of recruitment and retention of quality members for the NCC by creating new relationships and strengthening existing ones. Special thanks to our head coach, Cary Haney. Without his dedication and efforts, we could not have been nearly as successful nor had as much fun. With no reason to believe the improvements will cease, the Tide looks forward to continued success next season.
